Greenland's Interim PM Calls Emergency Meeting Against Trump

The interim Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute B. Egede, has called local party leaders to a crisis meeting to draft a joint rejection of Donald Trump's latest approach to seize the Arctic island. Egede expressed his determination to intensify the rejection of the U.S. president, stating that it is necessary to put an end to the disrespect towards Greenland. After losing support in the parliamentary elections, he seeks a unified stance against the annexation threat proclaimed by Trump.

In response to Trump's assertion about a potential annexation of Greenland, the five Greenlandic parties have expressed a desire for greater independence from Denmark, but none are in favor of joining the United States. The most voted party, Demokraatit, aims to boost the territory's economy before separating from Denmark. In this context, the president mentioned that the election results favor his cause, while political parties seek to form a new government coalition that defends Greenland's sovereignty.

The Danish Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has rejected Trump's claims and reaffirmed the position that Greenland will not be annexed to the United States. Rasmussen emphasizes that Greenlandic leaders are not seeking to abandon their current status in favor of U.S. nationality. Additionally, Greenland's parliamentary forces have made it clear that they oppose being part of the EU, although there are sectors advocating for a free association treaty with Washington.

Trump’s interest in Greenland, motivated by his national security vision, has generated tensions with Denmark and the rejection of local political parties. The president has insisted on the need for the annexation of the Arctic island, presenting a scenario that challenges international law and the positions of his European allies. Amid these tensions, Europe has shown its support for Denmark in defending Greenland's sovereignty.
