Greenland Democrats Win Parliamentary Elections

The opposition party Greenland Democrats won the parliamentary elections held on Tuesday, according to preliminary data from the Central Electoral Committee published this Wednesday. Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, saw the Democrats receive 29.9% of the votes, becoming the first party in the Inatsisartut, the Parliament. Their coalition partner in the Government, Naleraq, came in second with 24.5%.

The ruling party, Inuit Ataqatigiit, led by acting Prime Minister Mute Egede, achieved 21.4% of the votes, representing a significant decline of 15.3 percentage points compared to the 2021 elections. On the other hand, the Siumut party received 14.7% of the votes, and the Atassut formation garnered 7.3%, according to the news agency Xinhua.

With no party holding an absolute majority, the Greenland Democrats will have to negotiate with other political formations to reach a coalition agreement and form a new government. More than 28,000 registered voters participated in these elections, with a turnout of 70.9% across the 72 polling stations in Greenland.

It is noteworthy that these elections attracted global attention after former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed at one point his intention to 'take control of the island by any means.'
